Training Overview
The Composite Utility Pole Training program is a one-day, instructor-led course designed to prepare utility personnel, contractors, and field crews to safely and effectively work with fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP) utility poles.
As FRP composite poles continue to be deployed across utility systems, more crews are being asked to install and work with these structures in the field. This shift requires a clear understanding of how composite materials behave and how installation practices differ from traditional wood poles.
Developed through the collaboration of ACMA’s Utility & Communications Structures Council, this training combines classroom instruction with hands-on field demonstrations to reinforce proper techniques and real-world application.
Participants also receive access to a structured digital learning course to support pre-training preparation and reinforce key concepts following the session.
Proven in the Field: This program has already been delivered through a successful pilot training with industry participants, validating both the content and hands-on approach for real-world application.
Why This Training Matters
As composite (FRP) utility poles continue to see increased adoption across the industry, lineworkers are increasingly encountering materials and installation considerations that differ from traditional wood pole practices.
This training is not intended to teach basic linework skills. Instead, it is designed to help experienced field personnel understand the key differences between wood and FRP poles, and how those differences impact handling, installation, and long-term performance.
Without proper training, applying traditional wood pole practices to FRP can lead to installation errors, material damage, or reduced performance. This program equips crews with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to work confidently and correctly with composite pole systems.
Who This Training Is For: Utility lineworkers, field crews, contractors, and training programs responsible for the installation and handling of FRP composite utility poles.
What Participants Will Learn
- Proper handling and transportation of FRP poles
- Drilling, cutting, and field modifications
- Installation and alignment techniques
- Climbing considerations and fall protection
- Inspection and maintenance practices
- Removal and replacement procedures
Training Format
- One-day onsite training program
- Combination of classroom instruction and hands-on field training
- Delivered at utility locations, training centers, or partner sites
- Led by experienced industry instructors
- Includes access to a digital learning course for reinforcement
Developed with Industry Expertise
This program was developed through the direct involvement of ACMA’s Utility & Communications Structures Council, bringing together subject matter experts in composite materials alongside experienced field personnel with deep knowledge of lineworker tasks and responsibilities.
The training reflects both the technical requirements of FRP composite poles and the practical realities of field installation, ensuring the content is relevant, accurate, and immediately applicable on the job site.
